Next city council meeting: Tonight, April 28th at 6PM

Mont Belvieu Crossing

As part of the ongoing growth in Mont Belvieu, we have some new businesses confirmed by the developer, Fidelis. We get the overall consensus about Burlington, but these may give you something to be excited about!

Airi Ramen & Teahouse is slated to open next to Teriyaki Madness. In the same shopping center, we'll have Wingstop, which means we won't have to travel to that "other" city or navigate down Highway 146 to get your wings. Oh, and we can't forget Hobby Lobby. Forget Baytown. We will soon have our own.😉

Whether you're excited about growth or hesitant about its nuances, no one can deny it will bring convenience. It will also provide more opportunities to support local businesses—especially those who have been here for so long and helped build our community to what it is today! Restaurants like Lercy’s Diner, Hobo’s and Buck’s Pizza may often be out of the spotlight, but these are Mont Belvieu staples that have earned a reputation of excellence.

Barbers Hill Academics 📑

Barbers Hill ISD has earned top marks in the Texas Education Agency's 2023 A-F Accountability Ratings, with both the district and all of its campuses receiving "A" ratings. This achievement is especially notable given the implementation of a more challenging STAAR assessment in 2023.

"While experiencing unprecedented growth, our staff, leadership and board of trustees remain committed to maintaining our tradition of excellence," Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole said. "I'm proud that every aspect of our district performs at the A level!"

The 2023 STAAR assessment underwent significant changes that increased its difficulty, including incorporating writing components within Reading assessments, transitioning fully online, introducing new question types that comprise 25% of the test, and raising standards for College, Career, and Military Readiness.

Despite these challenges, all eight Barbers Hill schools achieved "A" grades.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Chloe Yowell attributed this success to "the unwavering dedication and expertise of our teachers, whose commitment creates an environment where learning and growth flourish."

The release of these ratings for the 2022-23 school year was delayed by litigation from approximately 120 school districts concerned about the revamped accountability system potentially lowering their ratings. A state appeals court ruled in April 2025 that the ratings could be published.

The TEA's accountability system evaluates districts on Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps between different student groups. Statewide, most districts (40%) received B ratings, with 209 districts earning D or F ratings. In the greater Houston area, Barbers Hill is among only four districts achieving an A rating, alongside Devers, Tomball and Friendswood ISDs.

TEA plans to release the 2025 ratings in August. Established in 2017, the A-F system aims to provide comprehensive school performance evaluation beyond just test scores.

Barbers Hill ISD's perfect ratings demonstrate its commitment to high academic standards and equitable outcomes for all students, even as state expectations change.
