Monday Edit

It’s Monday again…
Why did Monday apply for a job? Because nobody wanted to work with it anymore.
Summer’s almost here, and today we’re soaking up the last Monday before it officially kicks off for Barbers Hill ISD! Before long, you’ll be back in that car line—so enjoy those upcoming carefree days while they last! 😎
We’re thinking about creating a Mont Belvieu Parks Puzzle-A fun keepsake featuring some of your favorite local spots in a custom design. |

Mont Belvieu Scoop 🍦
🚧Keep an eye out, Mont Belvieu! Starting today, May 19, Public Works will begin sidewalk maintenance in several spots around town. Expect possible closures along Eagle Drive, FM 565, Wilburn Ranch, and City Park. Please stay alert and watch for crews in these areas!
Don’t Camp On My Mountain ⛰️
One of the biggest pet peeves for Mont Belvieu locals is hearing someone say “Mount” or reading “Mt. Belvieu.” While mont does mean “mountain” in French, using the wrong version is a sure sign you’re not from around The Hill.
The name goes back to when Zachary Taylor Long Winfree submitted the original application for Mont Belvieu. The name translates to “beautiful mountain,” and it’s likely Winfree—and the others influencing him—felt “hill” and “mountain” were close enough to make Mont Belvieu a fitting name.
This often brings up another question from visitors and new residents: Where exactly is “The Hill” or this so-called mountain? The Hill refers to the city’s salt dome, which rises about 45 feet above sea level—the landmark that gave Barbers Hill its name. This hill is along Highway 146 North as you’re heading towards Dayton. It might take a bit of squinting to ensure you see it— but this unique geological feature not only shaped the city’s landscape but also its identity.
So, the next time you hear someone say Mount Belvieu, feel free to set the record straight—because around here, it’s Mont with a little French flair and a whole lot of hometown pride.
Mont Belvieu Animal Shelter Scoop | Meet Gia
When this sweet pup first arrived at the shelter, she was pretty scared and unsure of her new surroundings. But with time, patience, and plenty of treats and pets from the staff, she quickly realized that people can be pretty great! Once she builds trust, she becomes the most loyal, goofy, and playful companion you could ask for. She may still be a little hesitant when meeting someone new, but with a little patience, she’ll warm up in no time. She hasn’t met any kids yet, so it’s still unknown how she’ll feel about them. So far, she seems to do well with other dogs.

Ceiling of Stars: Barbers Hill Looks to Reunite Former Students with Tiles
For nearly two decades, the ceilings of Barbers Hill Intermediate School displayed hundreds of hand-painted blue stars—each one celebrating a student’s reading achievement in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Now, with the building set for renovation, Barbers Hill ISD hopes to return these keepsakes to their original owners.
Spanning from 1998 to 2017, each tile features a student’s name and AR point total, marking their personal reading milestone. The tradition began after teachers Susan Enoch and Mary Bordelon introduced the idea, with Principal Jim Bergstrom and art teacher Holli Baker bringing it to life. Baker recalls students excitedly signing and choosing the perfect spot for their star.
Though hurricanes over the years damaged many tiles, more than 700 remain. The district now invites the community to help reconnect these pieces of Barbers Hill history with the students who earned them.
